Teen’s Suicide Hard to Understand

By John M Grohol PsyD

There are few things sadder and more troubling in this world than seeing a young person’s life cut short, not by an accident or illness, but by their own hand.

And this article in the St. Petersbury Times just brings this all home, reporting on the untimely death of a local teen who decided he had enough with life and hung himself in a local park. The story is a heart-breaking account of a seemingly happy life marred by the specter of depression and feeling the pain intensely, as teenagers often do (as I did when I was his age).

The article doesn’t shed any new insights into depression, teens, or why people choose to commit suicide when all else fails. What it is is a thoughtful remembrance of a young boy’s life. And a troubling reminder that teen suicide — the third leading cause of death amongst teens — can affect anyone, even someone who seemingly has it “all” going on.

“Teen’s Suicide Hard to Understand”

When I was a depressed teenager, a friend’s mother told me “suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.” I found out much later that she suffered from bipolar disorder and had been fighting her own demons for much of her life.

I wish there was a way to get this message out to all teens going through these situations. My heart goes out to his family.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know what the 1st and 2nd leading causes are?

1st is accidents (including motor vehicle accidents) and 2nd is homicide.

The 2nd and 3rd place switch if you limit the statement to a specific age group instead of just “teens and young adults,” and is also influenced by socio-economic class and race.

i am a depressed teenager and i know why people commit suicide. it’s because they give up. they’re not strong enough and they give up trying to live in a world that hurts them. unfortunately, not everyone finds something to save them in time and they die. i almost did it, but someone saved me.
these teenagers are just scared and no one really knows how to help them.

i have no one to save me
