ABC News reported on research from Sweden that tied breast implants to increase in suicide rates. The report noted that the study did not conclude on a specific potential cause for this, but did not rule out underlying psychiatric problems. I would argue that it is pretty obvious that actually having implants does not somehow cause an increase in suicide, but that it would make sense that a subset of people who seek to have implants may be at higher risk for suicide. The other big message in the report is that plastic surgeons are being encouraged to attend to the mental health needs of their patients, which is something that I hope is already standard practice, but appears not to be.
