Family, Genes, & Divorce

By Will Meek, PhD

A study covered by the CBC provides one of the ultimate “no-brainer” type research findings in recent memory: the drive to divorce has more to do with your family environment in childhood than your genetic makeup. Shocking to everyone reading this post I’m sure.

I think it is worth highlighting just how intensely people are studying genetic explanations for pretty much every possible human behavior, thought, or characteristic. While this may offer a new glimpse into some influences to our lives, we must not forget the profound influence our families, culture, and significant others have on our development. If all things human are reduced to genetics and neurotransmitters then they cease being human and instead become chemical.
