The Life of a Therapist: Lifetime’s State of Mind

By John M. Grohol, PsyD

There’s a new summer series on Lifetime TV called State of Mind starring the wonderful Lili Taylor. It’s on Sunday nights at 9:00pm ET. I just caught the premiere episode on my Tivo today (it’s also on their website) and was pleasantly surprised. Call me cynical, but I didn’t expect much from any series purporting to show the life of a therapist, since the life of a therapist is pretty much like the life of anyone else, except a lot more emotionally draining on a regular basis. While certainly Lili Taylor’s character has a more drama in her life than most therapists, I thoroughly enjoyed the first episode and look forward to including it in my regular weekly lineup of TV watching. Realistic? Well, of course it’s not 100% realistic, but then if it were, it wouldn’t be interesting. Call it my guilty pleasure.
