Live Earth is a 24-hour, 7-continent concert series taking place today that has brought together more than 100 musical acts and artists with 2 billion people taking part. It’s being broadcast live on Bravo TV and I’ve been watching it all day. Its goal? To trigger a global movement to solve the climate crisis.
Live Earth marks the beginning of a multi-year campaign led by the Alliance for Climate Protection, The Climate Group and other international organizations to drive individuals, corporations and governments to take action to solve global warming. Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore is the Chair of the Alliance and Partner of Live Earth.
Hate it, love it, do whatever, but you live here and your children’s children will live here too. Do nothing, maybe nothing bad will happen. But
do a little something, personally, to help, and it will help. In real amounts. Today.
It reminds me of Live Aid, a 16-hour concert held in Wembley Stadium in London and the now-demolished JFK Stadium in Philadelphia that raised over $100 million for famine relief in Ethiopia. Same kind of vibe, energy, and hope.
It is amazing to watch so many people band together to back and promote a single cause, such as making changes to combat global warming. While the current U.S. administration has turned a blind eye to this problem, it doesn’t mean the rest of the world hasn’t been sitting on its laurels. I hope we catch up soon.
The mental health angle? Well, you can’t have good mental health (what psychologists refer to as “flourishing”) without good physical health (see Keyes’ article in the Feb-March 2007 American Psychologist). And you can’t have good physical health with a planet that’s undergoing global climate change.
