Alcoholism Rates

By Will Meek, PhD

A study by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism has released information and alcohol abuse and alcoholism rates. According to their survey of US adults, 42% of men and 19% of women have experienced some form of alcohol abuse or alcoholism at some point in their lives. The research did not give specific figures on abuse/alcoholism, but in general alcoholism rates are thought to be somewhere between 4-5% of the US population. Furthermore, as most people know already, the percentage of people who find treatment for alcohol problems is generally only a fraction of the amount of people who need it.
