Bipolar News Everywhere

If it hadn’t been previously, I think bipolar disorder can finally be considered the ‘buzz diagnosis’ of the current time frame. There are ads, news reports, and press releases constantly hitting the wires and airwaves. Some people will point to the importance of raising awareness and how great this press can be for that purpose, others think of a larger drug company attempt to get more folks on drugs. Either way, stories like “Bipolar Spectrum Disorder Under-Recognized“, “Genetic Roots of Bipolar Unraveled“, and “Prognosis Worse with Childhood Bipolar Disorder” continue to be found daily. I really wonder about what the long term effect of this will be. Ideally it would mean that everyone legitmately with a bipolar illness can be in treatment, but there is definitely a shadow side to that.

I actually asked my doctor if I really had bipolar or if she was jumping on the bandwagon. Needless to say she was slightly miffed, but I have to wonder.

Also read Furious Seasons for some good insight into this phenomenon:
