Kate Winslet Speaks Out Against Anorexic Role Models

By John M Grohol PsyD
February 12, 2007

In an effort to try and undo people’s fascination with thinness — especially Hollywood and the New York fashion industry — Kate Winslet, an actress, recently spoke out about what calls a “disturbing trend:”

Winslet, speaking in Good Housekeeping magazine said: “It seems to me that (Hollywood) is breeding a whole new generation of anorexics. I look at people and I want to say ‘Look, it’s alright you can eat something’.”

Anorexia and other eating disorders have long been a growing societal problem that few people are willing to talk about, much less discuss openly in a magazine. Kudos to Winslet for shedding some more light on this dark condition that affects millions of people.

The UK’s Daily Mail has the scoop.

i think its revolting people would do that to themselves just to look ‘good’. its great people r against it.

AS someone battling anorexia I would love to say there is nothing revolting about this illness only the fact that society can bring you to the revolting point that this is what it takes to become happy with your self or loved by all who see you.

It is not about “looking good”. it is peoples biggoted views on this that seems to cause so much damage. as someone who has an Eating Disorder, it is revolting to listen to people who make judgements on a serious mental illness, and clearly dont know anything about it

I think that this website is nonesence and I don’t think that people should be woring about what other people look like… Yes I am one of them but, the people that you so call anorexic actually DO eat… Wejust eat different food and we just eat a little less then so called normal people eat… We either don’t eat at all or just a little bit of food every now and then or we eat all we want and throw up after every meal… I will not state which one i do but we dislikt when people tease us about our size… Can’t we all just get along?

we are not making fun of you. we are WORRIED. one of my best friends used to be seriously bulemic and anorexic, and he still slightly is. if he thinks he’s gaining ANY wait he throws up and won’t eat anything for a couple days. he’s seventeen, 5′9″, and 115 pounds. he’s skinny as hell and everytime i see him get to that point it scares me. really bad. one i had to force feed him because he hadn’t eaten anything in seven days and he was so sick he couldn’t get up off the couch. i respect how you want yourself to look but i wish that the “idea of being beautiful is being skinny” wasn’t so prominent. it’s also hard for the ones who love you to watch you sit and starve yourself to death. we just love you and want to see you live your life as long as you’re meant to. we don’t want to make fun of you. we want to be there for you, with you, loving you, laughing with you, holding your hand and living our lives with you.

i reakon use are all feral eat some food u retards that why it was made

You are an ignorant fool!! Educate yourself on the subject. True eating disorders have absolutely nothing to do with food. Food is the way to control the uncontrollable, or a way to punish oneself because they feel they do no deserve anything. Some people start out with a diet or want to be like the people in Hollywood..those people aren’t suffering with Anorexia Nevousa..they are doing it in vain. Sometimes it can get out of control and develop into the nightmare of an eating disorder. Talk to someone who truly suffers with the disease and maybe next time you’d shut you ignorant, uneducated mouth!!

i understand how everyone is there own worse critic, but the extreme cases of anorexia and bulimia scare me. one of my best friends recently became bulimic because she thinks shes fat and hidious, but shes really gorgous…. i completely agree with kylie.

I think its so sad that many young people feel the need to deprive themselves of food in order to feel good about themselves. I dont think they realise that this disease never lets them love themselves as they are, and they are ultimatly destroying themselves from the inside out.

What people with anorexia dont see is the tremedndous physical and emotional damage that self starvation inflicts so they continue dieting (badly)and or over exersising i understand that having this disorder you will proberbly never be cured mentaly and its all down to your peers and what people think the perfect body is .
