The story of two boys that were kidnapped and rescued in Missouri has maintained a national level of interest. It has media outlets all over the country calling forensic psychology experts to answer questions about how the kidnapper controlled the victims. The best I have seen/heard about this is a piece from NPR that interviewed Alex Chadwick, a retired forensic psychology expert from the University of Utah. He explained that the kidnappers use psychological controls similar to those used by some law enforcement, namely making threats to the victim about potential harm he could do to the victim’s family. Overall, it is a very brief yet fascinating report for anyone interested in the inner workings of these crimes.
