Happiness is Everywhere

By Will Meek, Ph.D.

Right now it’s hard not to run into some story, new book, or survey on happiness. Over the past decade the scientific research on happiness has produced a wealth of information (some of which remains conflicting), and since at least in Western cultures happiness remains one of the ultimate goals of life, each new finding is absorbed, processed, and consumed with hopes of the consumer bettering his/her life. I have read too many stories and research articles on the topic to count at this point, and one thing I can conclude is that in general, there continues to be a drive to find out which groups of people are happier than others, despite several large scale articles and reviews that conclude that demographic variables are not large contributers to happiness. But regardless, what purpose does this really serve? What value can we really derive from the idea that Republicans are happier than Democrats? Anyway, among all the big names that I follow in this growing field (Diener, Lyubomirsky, Seligman, etc) my favorite person to listen to is Dr. Daniel Gottlieb. He is a big part of this CNN promo story (and video clip) about a happiness program they are running, and he is well worth tuning into if you get the chance.
