Pop-Up Suicide Help

By Sandra Kiume

Screening for Mental Health, founders of National Depression Screening Day this Thursday as part of Mental Illness Awareness Week, offers self-assessment testing (alongside their in-person clinician screenings) for bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and of course, depression. Psych Central also offers many similar screening quizzes for mental disorders here.

The feature I like best is that if you choose any option other than that you think about suicide little or none of the time, this message pops up:

“If you have thoughts of harming yourself or others, dial 911 or go immediately to the nearest hospital Emergency Room for an evaluation.”

It’s a nice touch in their web site design (also great is a secure connection for all tests, eliminating privacy issues), and something for other sites to consider implementing as well. It may be a crucial pop-up reminder for someone at risk.
