Author Angela Grett will speak about her experiences and her new book, “My Mother’s Bipolar, So What Am I?,” tonight during Mental Illness Awareness Week at the Palette Gallery ‘n’ Cafe on Belcourt Avenue.
For her book, Grett interviewed her brother, sister and mother, as well as mental health experts and dozens of adult children of bipolar parents. She said she found a common thread of behaviors woven throughout their stories.
Grett said her mother first tried lithium. But when it made her ill, she stopped taking it. Her mother spent the next 15 years trying to find effective treatment. Then, in 2001, everything “came crashing down.” But this time, she began undergoing treatment that worked. Now, Grett said, her mother is “doing fantastic.”
Angela Grett is a corporate executive and founder of Ascynd – a business consulting firm. After spending over 20 years in the corporate arena, she made the transition into the world of speaking, writing and educating. She is active in the Depression-Bipolar Support Alliance Speaker’s Bureau. Her goal is to inform the public about the symptoms of bipolar disorder in order to reduce the stigma that keeps people from seeking help.
