BBC had a report from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (England) encouraging people with bipolar disorder to get annual (at minimum) health check. Many folks with bipolar enter into active treatment when they are first diagnosed and go for counseling and psychiatry visits, but these often weekly visits do not continue infinitely once the person learns how to cope with the disorder, learn to recognize when manic or depressive episodes are beginning, and how to prevent them from becoming too serious. However, the report notes that even after successful treatment and stabilization on medication, those with bipolar disorder should continue under care of their treatment provider.
Finally, I was pleasantly surprised to see that this article did not make specific mention of the new drug company campaign to raise awareness for “bipolar mania” and also avoided name dropping any specific medications for the condition. Bravo BBC!
