The Canadian Mental Health Association has some timely info for the national Mental Health Week, part of Mental Health Month internationally. (May is also Art Month. Here’s a way to combine the two: watch some videos on neuroaesthetics.)
From the CMHA:
Why do surprisingly few people make a conscious effort to improve their mental health? One reason, Marrett suggests, is that mental health has traditionally been defined as the absence of mental illness. This “disease model” has focused on alleviating suffering, with less attention given to promoting healthy minds.
But now a different view is emerging. It is called positive psychology, and it looks at the human mental condition from a wellness perspective. Positive psychology studies the characteristics that make up mental health, and identifies ways people can proactively improve it. It maintains that you can improve your overall well-being and enjoyment of life by adopting a mentally healthier lifestyle.
They offer The Mental Health Meter to help assess and improve your mental health.
