I’m worried about my Dad

By Dr. Marie Hartwell-Walker

Q: From a 13 year old girl:my dad has been addicted to alcohol, drugs and ciggaretts ever since he was 11..
it has been getting really bad latley and i am afraid he is going to loose his house and job.. i have walked in on him twice doing drugs. and when he is drunk he can get alittle carried away.. i think he might commite suicide.. he is very depressed.. i dont know what to do..?

A: This is a very big problem for a very young girl. You don’t mention your mother or another relative. I hope there is someone in the family you can share your worries with and who will get your Dad the help he needs. If not, it is time to talk to another adult you can trust. Most schools have a nurse or counselor who can help kids with problems. Other good choices are a favorite teacher or your doctor or the parent of a friend. When someone is this depressed, he can’t help himself and he probably won’t listen to his child. He needs other adults to help him out.
Meanwhile, Alateen is an organization that can give you some support and practical help. Here’s a resource for you:

Al-Anon/Alateen Hotline
Hope & Help for young people who are the relatives & friends of a problem drinker.

Call them to find a meeting in your city. Talking with other kids who are struggling with the same problem will help you feel less alone and scared.
I wish you well.
