Q. Hi, This is a little odd for me however I am a bit concerned about my 5 year old daughters recent behavior. Whenever I leave the room and she is watching a movie she lays on her tummy and grinds her vagina on the floor. I aksed her why she was doing this and she told me that”it feels good” I am just freaked out about this. Is this normal? I don’t want to yell at her and I have tried to talk to her about it but she gets very upset when I do. I have asked her if someone taught her this and she yells at me…. I have always let her know that she can tell me anything and I am just so amazed by this behavior. Please give me some advice.
A. I have definitely heard of this type of behavior occurring in young children. Your daughter is giving you a truthful answer when she says that it does feel good and this is simply why some children engage in this behavior. It could be something as simple as it feels good, or it could be something more. She could be reacting to a chaotic family situation and engaging in this type of behavior makes her feel good, calm and relaxed. It could be signs of molestation, or could even signal some type of medical disorder. My advice is that you take her to her pediatrician and have her evaluated. The pediatrician will be in the best position to give you answers to this possibly complicated question. Take care.
