How do handle a water phobia?

By Kristina Randle, Ph.D., LCSW

Q. My best friend Max a Bernie mountain dog is terrified ofthe water. I have never thrown him in the lake or know of any bad experiances that involve water. I know your laughing thinking is this for real? But I thought you are more qualified than the Dog Whisperer!! Thanks.

A. Cesar Millian, the Dog Whisperer, is very qualified. His skills and abilities to rehabilitate dogs (and their owners) are extraordinarily impressive. His techniques are psychologically sound and effective. His work with dogs is truly masterful. Perhaps you could write to him and ask him this question about Max and his fear of water. You could also read Cesar’s dog psychology website or blog (http://blogs5.nationalgeographic.com/channel/blog/dogwhisperer/), or even his new book, entitled: Cesar’s Way The Natural, Everyday Guide to Understanding and Correcting Common Dog Problems. In short, my advice is to try to gain help from Cesar’s book or website, or even from Cesar himself. I am very familiar with his work and I am very impressed with his theories and accomplishments. I wish you luck with your best friend, Max.
