RE: schizophrenia and medical school

by Kristina Randle, LCSW
June 6, 2006

Several months ago I inquired about my decision to go to medical school after being diagnosed with schizophrenia. I just wanted to thank you for your advice. I think I was measuring myself by the wrong yardstick, as you said…the one I used before I got this insidious disease. After a frustrating semester, I have come to the conclusion that I will not be attending medical school. I will, however, finish my undergraduate degree in psychology no matter what it takes. Although my mind feels dull and blurred, I was able to maintain a 4.0 GPA this semester, and my independent study project on schizophrenia was received very well by my advisor. Graduate school is too far in the future to contemplate, but I wanted to let you know that I’ve re-evaluated my future without giving it up entirely. Thank you again for your kind advice. I’m sure you’ve acted as a catalyst for many people to seek treatment they otherwise might not have gotten.

A. Thank you so much for writing back to let me know how things are going for you. I really appreciate hearing from you. I am glad you benefited from my help. I hope others do as well. If you have any future questions/comments, please feel free to write again and I will do my best to assist you. I think your efforts are quite remarkable and I commend you for all of your hard work. I mean that with all sincerity. I truly wish you the very best.

With warmest regards,
Kristina
