Q. I have been suffering from migraine/cluster headaches for 4 1/2 years now. I was told it is related to degrenerating disks in my neck. The suggested remedy is neck surgery which I am very reluctant to pursue. I have researched the doctor’s qualified to perform these types of surgery in my area, and the results of success are less than encouraging. I am truly at my wits end with living with the constant pain. I have become very depressed and am starting to develop agoraphobia because I often feel nauseaous and fear being ill in public. I am becoming more and more suicidal, I’m unable to work, my family is functioning without me most of the time. The treatment regiment always leads to drug therapy. I am very afraid that my last resort is to take my own life.
A. It must be extremely difficult to have to deal with the pain you are experiencing but I plead with you to not give up. If you are at the point of thinking about suicide, you should seek professional psychological help. If you are making plans to hurt yourself, you should go right away to the hospital or call 911 immediately.
Life is a precious thing and you can’t give up, especially when it does not sound like you have exhausted all of your possibilities. You may not have to have the surgery but already deciding you do not want the surgery means you have not exhausted all of your possibilites. There are pain clinics that specialize in dealing with pain and have been a Godsend for many pain sufferers. I know you said you have done research on the doctor’s in your area and I am not sure how many doctors you have been to but I would encourage you to visit a few actually in person and get their medical opinions. You might have other options you have not pursued or may not have even thought of or know exist. Don’t give up and please, if you are thinking of hurting yourself, get help immediately.
