Please answer soon since the report is due this week. We have searched the apa website and others but cannot find the answers she seeks. My college books are of no help even though the one is a psych book. A. Check out the Occupational Outlook Handbook. Relationship problems: What should I do?

Tuesday, May 24th, 2005

Q. I've been a widow for almost 5 years and have been in a monogomous relationship for 4 years. About a year ago, my boyfriend proposed and I accepted with the understanding that I could not move forward with planning a wedding until I eliminated some of the stresses I inherited. My husband died first, my mother (who lived with us) shortly thereafter. My two sons were still in jr. high and high school...I've been managing two family businesses, rental properties, and pursueing an acting career. The problem is two-fold. 1) My boyfriend kept insisting we set a wedding date because he was embarrassed when people asked him and he couldn't give them an answer, and 2) ...

My mothers behaviour

Tuesday, May 24th, 2005

Q. My mother has been suffering from mental health problems for the last 20 years. ever since the birth of myself and the death of her mother. When she refused help from her family and became a danger to my sister and I my father left and took us with him. I regularly meet her and last week my mother, sister and i went on holiday for a week. since i remember she has always been crazy but not 24 hours a day. shouting at random people, cheeking the codes on banknotes and shopping items, giggling like a child regularly, giving obscure advice, mood swings,no manners whatsoever and most significantly, for her anyway,a constant quest to relate things by name.for example, "look that boat is called rigby. thats the same ...

Side affects from Sexual Addiction?

Tuesday, May 24th, 2005

Q. I have been having a relationship with a man for three years. I've been suspicious from time to time when I have found women's lingerie in his home. With in the past 9 months he confided in me that he was a sex addict. He started going to meetings and it seemed to help quite a bit. He has since stopped. What I want to know is can this addiction trickle over to living in a dirty, clothes and mail all over the floor plus garbage environment. He doesn't open his mail. Always late on bills and lately money seems to be less. He is not interested in sex with me anymore unless I wear something ...

Too Many Problems

Tuesday, May 24th, 2005

Q. I've been struggling for depression for a long time, exactly how long I'm not sure, but I know thoughts of suicide have been present since I was 14. I've waited this long to reach out for help, but when I tried to tell my mom, even telling her about my suicide thoughts, she didn't do anything, even though I asked for an appointment with the doctor. That was about a year ago when I told her and I'm just now trying again to find help elsewhere, because the suicidal thoughts are becoming really casual, like having a conversation with a friend, I'll tell myself one morning "maybe I could overdose on Aspirin..." or something. I don't want it to be this way anymore ...

Cutting and depression

Tuesday, May 24th, 2005

Q. I don’t know why ive been feeling really depressed and had the urges to start cutting myself and its the only that makes me feel better, this has happened before about 2 months ago and my lfie hasnt changed at all since then and I dont no why its coming back or what to do. Is there any advice you can give to me that might help? A. Cutting or wanting to cut is not normal. It’s not a healthy way to deal with your emotions. I would suggest you seek help from a counselor to find out what is making you want to cut. Talking to a therapist can help you find out you why you are hurting emotionally and ...

Cutting,suicidal thoughts/attempts,can’t sleep…

Tuesday, May 24th, 2005

Q. My family and I moved to WA when I was 12. Shortly after that I began pulling out my hair. I would wake up at least 3 times every night. I had stopped pulling out my hair at the begging of 8th grade (13 yrs. old) and had replaced the behavior with every eating disorder except bulima. However, at the start of high school I stopped, and started cutting myself. I had also attempted suicide. For the past 3 months I hadn't cut or thought of suicide. Recently, I have had problems with sleeping that are so bad that I need to take a sleeping pill every night, I have started cutting again, I can't concentrate in school, I have stomach aches, head aches, ...

Consistent Episodes with Boyfriend’s ex-wife

Tuesday, May 24th, 2005

Q. My boyfriend's ex-wife is giving us fits. When it comes to anything, she has to have total "control" over it; it has to be her way or no way. If he even attempts to gain any kind of control over anything, she flies off the handle and does whatever it takes to gain control over it, once again, even if she has to lie to gain that conrol back. Also, she is a person that will not take any blame for anything; she will take a situation and twist it around to her advantage to make my boyfriend or whoever, look like the blame is their fault. If you try to convey that the situation occurred because of something ...

Is my dad displaying psychotic symptoms?

Wednesday, May 4th, 2005

Q. My father is approaching fifty, and when I still lived with my parents, he seemed to me very unstable and difficult to live with. Some of his behaviour is just outrageous in retrospect, but it's amazing, my family chooses to ignore it and never talk about it. First off, he has told me that he can hear my thoughts. I'm serious! And he was completely serious as well. He gave me specific examples and said that sometimes my thoughts "weren't always good". Apparently he has "heard" my thoughts since I was 12, so that is about 6 years. To me this gives a good explanation for some of his more random outbursts, as he would often accuse me out of nowhere for being ...

How to distance myself from a sociopathic girlfriend

Wednesday, May 4th, 2005

Q. I' ve been going with my girlfriend for about 5 months now. Recently, she has began to steal from me. This is especially disturbing knowing that the closest person to me is the only person that has ever burned me. We live apart, but have been spending every weekend together for the past 5 months. We were planning on moving in the second she found a job in my city. But not anymore. I confronted her about the thefts and she took control of the discussion by raising her voice, being sarcastic and evasive, and using histrionics. It is apparent that she either has a personality disorder or is simply a cold and apathetic individual. ...

Abuse and abandonment by therapist

Wednesday, May 4th, 2005

Q. I have been dealing with severe PTSD for the past decade, a majority of it stemming from child abuse, neglect and abandonment. I worked weekly with my therapist for 9 years. She said because of what my mother and father had done, that she had to reparent me. She insisted on having sessions in my home. Called on the phone nightly. I was supposed to completely rely on her and let her in completely if I wanted to survive. She would insist I hold her hand when I was having flashbacks or dissociated. Sometimes she would insist I sit down on the floor next to her. She then dissapeared for a couple of weeks and when she came back she was mean and ...
