Life Changes Track Internet Changes
June 19, 2000You've probably heard by now, but I recently changed jobs (and horses, one might say!) and took a position with a company called HelpHorizons.com. This company helps bring professionals and consumers together online in a secure, supportive environment. What we do today will look somewhat different in a few months from now as we improve the Website and services offered, but you can go there to get an idea of the types of things we're talking about.
The company is located in Boston, MA, which necessitated yet another move, just about a year after I moved from Columbus, Ohio to Austin, Texas. If you'll recall, I moved to Austin to join drkoop.com, a now-floundering e-health site (Can we say "fire sale"?? I knew we could!). After building drkoop.com's mental health center, I decided, for a number of reasons, to leave drkoop.com and join an Internet startup based in San Jose, CA. After some questions arose about the company's ability to implement its plans, I decided to take some time off and focus on my consulting business full-time. Well, that lasted a very short time.
After seeing HelpHorizons.com's site and their strategy, and meeting with the folks who built it, I couldn't resist joining them. They're a great group of people who not only believe in what they're doing, but also have the vision to see how the Internet can transform the way we do things online. And obviously, they can implement their vision. I've learned more about business and .com startups in the past year than most analysts in "e-health" have learned over their career. Hopefully I'll be able to put this information and knowledge to use in the future.
So I'm moving. The boxes are getting packed, all of the mundane contacts have been made to have fuel oil, electricity, and cable in my new home. I'm living in a small seaside community north of the city called Newburyport. It's a picturesque small, colonial-style port town and I'm looking forward to living there. Although I won't be spending much time at home (HelpHorizons.com's offices are in downtown Boston), I'm looking forward to the time I will be there. A pleasant change from the hustle and bustle of an anonymous Austin suburb.
As usual, I move myself. I figure when I can't do that, I've got too much stuff. My brother is helping me do the drive across the country, which is always a mix of pleasure and pain. Long hours on the road, but nice to see so much of this country we live in (if only for a fleeting moment).
So that's what I'm up to this month. I'll be settled in by this time next month. Until then, wish me luck on the move!
