Every year, SAMHSA and other organizations join together to organize the Alternatives conference -- a conference dedicated to help those who are leaders in peer support, consumers of mental health services, and psychiatric survivors.
The conference attracts approximately 1,000 participants every year, who gather to share their stories, organize to help their local communities build sustainable recover programs, and ensure the government listens to their unique mental health needs.
The theme of the 2012 conference is Honoring Our History, Building Our Future. Alternatives is the oldest national mental health conference organized by and for mental health consumers/survivors.
This year's conference will be held October 10 - 14, 2012 at the Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront hotel. Portland, OR is a beautiful and beautifully eclectic city that will serve as a perfect host for this annual mental health event.
While everyone is invited to attention this conference, it tends to attract mostly mental health consumers and psychiatric survivors, and the professionals who help them.
More information will be forthcoming shortly about this conference. You can learn more about Alternatives by visiting last year's conference site, too.
